Abstract:It's not a pretty sight, and it's certainly nothing for South Africans to be proud of. But the black township of Sowedo - which for millions became synonymous with the antiapartheid struggle of the 70s and 80s - is starting to attract visitors from around the world. In this paper the author describes his half-day tour of Sowedo (SOuth WEst TOwnship). He describes 'elephant houses' - so named because the roofs of these cookie-cutter dwellings resemble the backs of elephants; then he describes used- clothing markets and roofless bus. Further there is the description of Mandela Squatter Camp (in this part of Soweto the inhabitants don't have electricity at all) and Winnie Mandela museum.
