Abstract:Any decision made regarding the future supply and demand of liquid fuels must be seen in the light of the government's stated policy of reducing the country's reliance on imported crude oil. Since the commissioning of oil-from-coal plants, the industry has been skewed towards the production of petrol. The options available to modify patterns for petrol and diesel fuel are examined. The decision to construct an indigenous diesel engine manufacturing plant was motivated largely by the desire to be self-sufficient in engines essential for the most productive sectors of the economy. Emphasis is laid on the shorter-term options, since it is not certain that any imbalance problem will be permanent.
