Abstract:It is widely believed, especially in South Africa, that apartheid and capitalism are, if nor one and the same, at least closely related. Thus, many of those people working to destroy apartheid believe that capitalism must also be destroyed. Economic development and economic reform in the country are analyzed, and the conclusion is drawn that the economic system of South Africa is not really capitalist at all, except in the sense of state capitalism, but is more socialist in its fundamentals. Capitalism - meaning free market - is actually the apartheid's greatest foe and the greatest hope of South Africa's oppressed blacks.
