Abstract:The distinctions and relationship between social identities and commitment at work are not yet clear. This article suggests that these concepts are distinguishable with regard to their meaning, foci of attachment, mindsets, volitionality, and behavioural implications. In addition, situated and deep structure social identities are differentially antecedent to exchange-based and value-based commitments, and that commitment mediate the influence of identities on motivation and behaviour. To conclude, the paper discusses the implications of multiple identities for employees in different kinds of collectives.
