Abstract: | A recent survey of 80 managers showed that their top four activities were: 1. planning future policies and activities; 2. staff development and training; 3. keeping up-to-date with new developments; 4. developing new systems. Today's manager needs to be innovative, flexible, achievement-oriented and unwilling to sacrifice long-term survival for short-term results. Goal orientation skills are essential for developing these qualities. Reactive managers are going to need a rethink of their roles. An appropriate training program may enable them to become goal-oriented, proactive managers. Managers must learn how to handle more goal areas at a time, and how to get organizational support. Goal oriented sense of reality is needed for success. |
