Abstract:While globalization offers better opportunities for developing countries to catch up with more advanced economies,Brazil failed to grasp this chance until recently. Since the early 1990s, liberalization and stabilization measures have helped the country to regain attractiveness for foreign risk capital. Yet Brazil's future position in the international division of labour remains uncertain unless fiscal consolidation renders macroeconomic stabilization sustainable and discretionary import restrictions are ruled out. Brazil's long-term prospects of becoming involved in globalized production depend on increased efforts towards human capital formation, an adequate supply of business services and open trade policies in the context of Mercosur.
