Abstract:Many computer numerically controlled pick-and-place machines for populating printed circuit cards with surface mounted technology claim high burst rate estimates of throughput by exploiting concurrent operations. A systems approach analysis is required to effectively exploit the concurrent capabilities of these machines, to determine the number of tape reels to be allocated, and to which of the carriers each component should be assigned. The characteristics of the machine's component delivery mechanism, i. e. the flexibility of the controller, and the fixturing for component feed, impinge on the throughput rate directly via the time lost due to an imbalance in the number of components supplied by each carrier.
