Abstract:The study analyzes the discrepancy between actual and desired working hours in a multinational setting. The latest data from the International Survey Program (ISSP) is used, with a focus on work orientations hours constraints. The findings suggest that hours constraints are interrelated with macroeconomic variables such as 1)unemployment rates, 2)GDP per capita, 3)average weekly work hours and 4) income inequality. On both macro- and micro levels, sociodemographic variables such as prosperity and income and high risk of unemployment are important in determining working hours constraints. With respect to working conditions, such constraints are also affected by gender issues.
