Abstract:The heavy demand throughout the former Eastern bloc for special steels, largely for use in armaments production, and the consequent need for steel alloys, together with the sheer size of the mineral deposits, particularly in the USSR, were the factors behind the priority accorded to the development of a large-scale alloy industry in Eastern Europe. But in the wake of political demise of the former system and the subsequent economic collapse, east european producers of primary goods lost significant shares of their domestic markets.
