Abstract:Technology is making it easier for big business to gather personal information about us. Should we be nervous ? British novelist George Orwell envisioned a future in which the eye of government monitors citizens' every move. Now, it turns out that Big Brother is far less interested in you than big business. Computers can collate personal data to find patterns that reveal citizens' preferences, habits or even hints about their personality. Information is power: Some tips for the unwary citizen; cash payments, no more information by surveys or registration forms, requests for your personal data files for data corrections , reading all fine print, demanding telemarketers to get your name removed from their lists, requests to all organizations keeping sensitive information on how they keep all your data secured.
