Abstract:Africa's still industry is in a state of flux. Grandiose plans by many African countries to construct huge steel complexes are largely in ruins. The global price of steel is at an all time low. Despite this, the outlook for the future is promising. Throughout the continent countries are under World Bank pressure to rationalise unwieldy public sector enterprises through privatisation or the offering of management contracts. The steel sector reflects this trend and a scramble is now developing to put once viable plans back into profitable production after years of below par performance in a bid to fuel growth in largely undeveloped industrial sectors.
