Abstract:This paper considers the design of short-lived electronic consumer goods (hereafter as: el-prods.) within contemporary society. It suggests a direction that is more consistent with the priorities of sustainability and also with more profound understandings of meaning. A brief overview of el-prods. is given as to their instrumental, social and positional attributes, along with some of their social and environmental (here as: env-al.) consequences. Presented is a simple conceptual 'post-consumerism' electronic object encapsulating various aspects of contemporary critique. Based on this study drawing on philosophical and env-al. critiques of technology, new priorities for design practice are developed.
