Abstract:In order to study interorganizational relationships, a plenty of research utilizes large alliance (hereafter as: alnc./alncs.) databases (as: db/s.), e.g, CORE, MERIT-CATI, RECAP, SDC etc. This study analyzes five prominent alnc. db/s., focusing on technology alncs. Examined are the db/s.' consistency of coverage and completeness. It is assessed whether different db/s. produce the same i. patterns in sectoral composition, ii. temporal trends, and iii. geographic patterns in alnc. activity. Three previously published alliance studies are replicated to assess the impact of data limitations on research outcomes. The results suggest among others that the databases report only a fraction of formally announced alliances. However, the db/s. show strong symmetries in i., and also in alliance activity over time and geographic participation.
