Abstract:Nowadays people live longer and over their lifespan they may develop a range of disabilities that are no longer perceived as a barrier to enjoying high quality of life. A balanced approach to functionality and supra-functionality in product design is more important than ever with increased user expectation of products. Consumers are acknowledged as being important sources of insight and innovation. Empathic design strategies rely on the user being an active partner within the information creation and designing process. This will ensure that more intuitive design outcomes are generated. This article examines empathy and the empathic horizon in the context of ensuring relevant design outcomes. This article also considers the importance of the products surrounding us, referred to collectivity as our "material landscapes".
