Abstract:This paper aims to shed light on the connections btw. knowledge (herein as: knwl.) management (KM) and product development (here as: p-d.) as a knwl. intensive process. With the focus on the "social side" of KM, it is proposed that different KM orientations (herein as: ornts.) can come up as a result of higher/lower emphasis on cultural and structural (here as: c-and-s.) enablers. These KM ornts. generate specific potential to manage the tension and paradox of managing both knwl. exploration (as: k-explrn.) and knwl. exploitation (as: k-explotn.) knwl.during the p-d. Based on survey research with data gathered from 80 Spanish p-d. projects developed, it is shown that p-d. efforts can show three different KM ornts. significantly differing in their results as to k-explrn. and, particularly, as to k-explotn. In addition, p-d. requires a symbiosis btw. both c-and-s. enablers in order to best manage the paradox of exploration and exploitation.
