Abstract:Eight areas in which employers can take positive actions during layoffs are identified: providing advance warning; distributing severance pay and extended benefits; making outplacement assistance available; providing additional training; treating laid-off workers with fairness; demonstrating concern for workers who remain on the job; dealing constructively with the labor unions involved; demonstrating social responsibility in the communities in which layoffs occur. The effects of widespread layoffs at two locations, the Challenger disaster site and the Pittsburgh steel mills, are described and analyzed. Managers need to think carefully about the consequences of such layoffs and to reduce their drawbacks.
