Abstract:The importance of implicit concepts in the consideration of energy use for passive climate control in buildings is shown. Much confusion results from widespread failure to define key concepts, especially those related to human requirements. It is argued that meaningful quantification of total solar energy use is impossible, and is therefore argued against attempting to make statements such as "Solar energy use is small globally...". If an aspect of solar energy use is to be quantified, the purpose of quantification should be stated, the aspect should be carefully defined, and any contextual qualifications should be stated.
