Abstract:Loan defaults have soared as Italy's economic situation reveals weaknesses. David Lane reports from Rome. Italian banks are suffering. As business and the family sector absorb the blows of corporate crisis, bankruptcy, liquidation and unemployment, official statistics reveal how banks' accounts are feeling the battering of recession. However, Italian bankers can draw comfort from some bright features that lighten this situation. The economy now seems to have turned the corner.
