Abstract:High growth, medium sized companies play a role in the business and economic life of a nation which is out of proportion to their relative size. They represent an elite, outperforming competitors and the economy in wealth and job creation, and innovation. This article reports the results of a study which followed the fortunes of a number of medium sized British companies that achieved high growth during 1980-1990. It also tracks the experiences of a wider business population revealing the strategies that lead to success and those that are prone to failure.
