Abstract:When it comes to total quality management (TQM) schools appear to have a lot to learn. TQM originated in manufacturing and was later adopted by the service industries. However, a report in the journal of the American Society for Quality Control reveals that only 105 US public and private school districts are embracing TQM. Most have been at it for only a year or two, and are concentrating on administration and management. Schools could benefit greatly from TQM principles and practices. The example of health care - an industry recently converted to TQM - showed the way.
