Abstract:This paper proposes that economic factors be considered when deciding on the level of "first-off" inspection to which regularly renewed processes should be subjected. It is shown that the level of inspection can be fixed in such a way as to optimize the economic performance of the process. A suitable function for optimisation is derived and examples of optimal solutions are presented and discussed. This paper suggests that a formal first-off inspection strategy can be developed, whereby the number of items inspected, before deciding whether the process has been incorrectly reset, is chosen on economic grounds.
