Abstract:This article provides results from a research project on the competitive position of Turkey with respect to Spain, Italy, Greece, France and Cyprus. These countries were chocen by foreign tourists and service provideres as the direct competitor to Turkey. The data used in the analysis was collected from 1,086 respondents through a six-week period in the summer of 2004. The study indicates that both groups are homogenous to suggest that Turkey's advantage is the friendliness of local people and Turkey's disadvantages are the physical distance to the target markets and the effectiveness of the methods used for promotion and advertising.
