Abstract: | This study explores the effect of the level (here as: lvl-of) institutional development of host countries on lvl-of and variation in foreign affiliate (here as: f-a.) performance (as: perf.). Based on a longitudinal analysis of more than 30.000 f-a.-year cases including almost 7.000 f-a. in 38 host countries from 1996 to 2001, the f-a. perf. is shown to vary noticeably both across and within host countries. Based on the results, it is suggested that the level of institutional development, as determined by the Institutional Development Index (IDI), has a strong negative curvilinear relationship with the variation in f-a. perf. and a negative effect on the level of f-a. performance. |
