Abstract:The general manager of the Italian central bank noted: "In many aspects, the level of integration of our financial market with the international one continues to be lower than that of other large countries". This retardation is partly due to the exchange-control regulations, partly due to the inertia of the Italian banks. Recently things have improved: banks have innovated their instruments and techniques much faster than earlier. These improvements have attracted foreign operators into Italy, while Italian experts went to work into foreign countries. The internationalization of the Italian banks has got a new impetus from the 1992 reform of the EEC.
