Abstract:There is dealt with the issue which is central to the usefulness of any engineering problem situation solution or design that is obtained, for the most important and critical determinant of an engineering design may be the manner in which a problem is formulated initially and the perspective with which its ingredients are selected from a generally complex, messy situation. The basic conceptualization of a complex engineering problems situation requires considerable experience and/or ingenuity, backed by level headed judgment. The problem of choosing between two alternative formulations of the same engineering situation is posed in a decision theoretic framework.
