| Abstract: | Successful planning of strategic research and development projects depends upon a variety of planning-tools and a proper organization to handle the planning and decision process. The paper focuses on an explorative study, including the experiences of ten firms. A special topic of the study deals with "obstructions" and a relevant distant early warning system to stabilize the success of strategic research and development projects. The empirical data cannot be regarded representative. But several discussions within the R and D Management of Schmalenbach Gesellschaft show that most of the results are important for all R and D intensive companies in general. |
