Abstract:United States airline deregulation is becoming a classic case study on the proper degree of government intervention in private industry. If people believe that deregulation ultimately brutalized air travellers, they will be less willing to accept greater limits on the public sector. It is therefore important that empirical research explore the effects of this policy change. Evidence of a detailed study is reported as a reply to the question whether the hub-and-spoke route systems spawned by deregulation have, as several leading publications have suggested, created misery for millions of air travellers. The findings offer a lot of surprising results to be considered.
