Abstract:France is not alone in its current concerns over labour market rigidities - a similar debate is occurring in many European countries. Confronted by extremely high unemployment and grave worries about international competitiveness, Spain's Socialist Government is implementing a program of labour market reform which is arguably far more radical than that presently underway in France. Extensive deregulation of existing provisions in areas such as placement, subcontracting, employment contracts, part-time work, collective reduncancies and working time have provoked union opposition, culminating in a 24-hour general strike. The Government however, has been unmoved by the protest.
