Abstract:Bank of Spain deregulated interest rates for both savings banks and commercial banks in 1987. The two types of institutions have the same obligatory requirements but the savings banks still cannot issue equity nor increase capital and they are largely confined to their regions. Under the challenge of the 1992 EEC reform Spanish savings banks want to expand as freely as commercial banks, to be able to meet internationally. The savings banks are much more competitive than the commercial banks and they have good prospects for development.
