Abstract:New Zealand's relatively sudden shift in government policy toward telecommunications is part of the nation's economic restructuring following earlier record trade deficits. Under the current Labour government, changes are going into effect which are intended to improve the efficiency of and enhance the role of telecommunications in the economy. The process of rewriting the policy on telecommunication involved reexamination of the traditional government monopoly structure of postal and telephone service under the New Zealand Post Office. Whether or not New Zealand's experiment with extensive deregulation and possible privatization of telecommunication succeeds nobody knows.
