Abstract: | The Congress of the USA was persuaded a decade ago to deregulate the airlines, banking and savings and loan institutions, bus lines, cable TV, railroads, telecommunications, and trucking. It sounded then like a pretty good idea, because consumers would enjoy lower prices and better services as new entrepreneurs thrived in a competitive marketplace. It turned out now, however, that while not without its successes, deregulation, on balance, is a failure. Consumers have witnessed a nearly universal deterioration in services coupled with highly discriminatory pricing. Evidence of failure are the savings and loan crisis, collapsing airline, bus and trucking industries, higher telephone and cable TV rates. A solution of the problem is discussed. |
