Abstract:There are many difficulties in obtaining statistical data about the urban metabolism of cities worldwide. This article presents a new methodology developed particularly for quantifying urban material flows, which helps to characterize a city's metabolism. The effectiveness of this methodology was tested in a case study in Lisbon. Lisbon's material balance for 2004 was quantified in order to generate the character of the urban metabolism of Lisbon. Results show that Lisbon consumes 11.223 million tonnes, 80% of them nonrenewable, and outputs 2.149 million tonnes annually. The excessive consumption of nonrenewable materials may be caused by a large investment in building construction and a large shift towards private car traveling.
