Abstract: | By developing an empirical model, this study investigates, whether the strongest organizations survive, when distinguished between two aspects of organizational strength; organization's viability and it's competitive intensity. Viability results only from competitive success, learning and selection lead to increases both viability and competitive intensity among survivors. This outcome hinges on whether organizations are small or large. Small organizations are more likely to survive and to be stronger competitors, but for large organizations viability does not require competitive success; they can enhance their viability through institutional mechanisms that are not linked directly to market competition, and they can buffer their weak units from selection pressures. |
