Abstract:This article examines the impact patenting has on university professors' scientific productivity. The study is based on longitudinal data for a matched sample of 592 Italian academic inventors and controls, and scientific productivity is here measured by numbers of publications and citations. The findings of the study indicate that Italian academic inventors are more productive scientists that their non-patentee colleagues: they publish more, the papers they publish are of a better quality, and their pateting usually also increases their productivity. The results also suggest that the positive effect of patenting varies across different scientific fields.
