| Abstract: | China's free-trade zones are oases of relative freedom for foreign business. Regulatory restrictions on trading activities have been among the most serious impediments to foreign business in the PRC. In 1990, in an effort to provide foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) with a wider business ambit than is permitted nationwide, China's central government approved the establishment of a handful of bonded zones. The experiment was expanded two years later, and 13 nationally approved "bonded" or "free-trade" zones (FTZs) now operate in China, along with a few that have not received central government approval. |
