Abstract:When business ethics is properly understood, it neither requires government intervention in business, nor justifies any kind of market regulation. Unfortunately, recognition of this fundamental truth has sometimes been obscured by confusions about the nature of truth, the role of business ethics and the meaning of the free market. One of the most basic confusions concerns what business ethics is. Contrary to popular opinion, it has nothing to do with pious demands that business serve stakeholders or pursue "social responsibilities" in place of owner value.
