Abstract:Regional economic arrangements in the form of free trade areas and customs unions have proliferated over the past decades and got an additional push in the last few years, in spite of the principles of multilateralism and nondiscrimination embodied in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). THe idea of establishing a Transatlantic Free Trade Area (TAFTA) between the European Union and the United States (and eventually its partners Canada and Mexico in the North American Free Trade Agreement - NAFTA) shows that the appeal of regionalism remains strong to politicians, business leaders and academic analysts.
