Abstract:Gatt negotiations are underway concerning the liberalisation of trade in agricultural products. It is not clear as yet whether the measure of protectionism used will be some aggregate (e. g. the producer subsidy equivalent) or some desegregate one. Switzerland is in either case in a delicate position because it offers relatively high, subsidized prices to its domestic producers. The country must change its agricultural policy (e. g. give lump-sum instead of price subsidies , increase farm size, differentiate production) if it will survive likely GATT measures.
