Abstract:Computer-aided software engineering (CASE) offers an opportunity for order of magnitude improvement in systems development. However, implementing this technology will cause a discontinuity in systems development methodology. Not all people who are proficient in current techniques will make the transition to CASE. More technical IS professionals will provide the data foundation and environment for users who will do the substance of systems work. The approach of UNUM Life Insurance to CASE is summarized. The company's rationale and culture, the business case for CASE, tactics for implementation, issues and driving forces, and implications for both IS and non-IS managers and professionals are explored.
