Abstract:Multiattribute decision models predict choice by comparing the total utility or value of different alternatives. Typically, the total value of an alternative is computed as the weighted sum of the values associated with each attribute's outcome or level. It is important to note that the weights applied to each attribute should depend on the attribute's range of levels. As an attribute's range of levels increases, so should its weight. However, in empirical measurements this adjustment of attribute weights is often less than is theoretically required. This inadequate adjustment of attribute weights is called the 'range effect'. In this study the authors compare the range effect for nine methods commonly used to obtain attribute weights.
