Abstract:It is challenging for the management of research and development (R&D) professionals to combine the wide corporate objectives to the needs of technical employees. Only little attention has been paid to the HRM of the highly educated knowledge workers in R&D, especially in the international level. The author examines the impacts of internal and external compensation on performance, founding on a large scale survey conducted in decentralized R&D laboratories of multinational corporations’ (MNCs’) in Greece. Three different types of research implemented by MNCs are introduced, and the role of the R&D department seems to affect strongly the researcher’s needs and satisfaction determinants. The results of the survey indicate that in this peripheral economy of the EU the R&D professionals are motivated by external and mostly financial compensation.
