Abstract:A closer examination suggests that the decline of USA competitiveness has been caused, in part, by the failure of USA companies to implement promising new technologies (CAD, CAM, FMS, FMC, GT, CIM). It is shown that the internal decision-making process itself hinders the adoption of innovative technologies. The problem may be in obsolate resource allocation models which overemphasize cost savings and underemphasize other benefits (improved quality, decreases in delivery time, customization of product, better adaptibility to market changes). Arguments are presented to support changes in investment justification practices. Improved decision making tools are offered. Profitability and measurement issues are considered.
