Abstract:Single-site databases are becoming too expensive, slow and limited. In a truly distributed environment, databases can be divided so that pieces can be physically located closest to where the data will be used. Systems are needed to overcome the barrier of multiple vendors, media and locations. To accomplish that, information systems will have to master a new technology: distributed database management. Secure, distributed databases with real-time updating and standardized query languages are needed. Local homogeneous databases can be distributed now, but broader distribution awaits development of two-phase commit, more gateways and standards.
