Abstract: | The technical landscape of information processing has changed dramatically in recent years. Personal computers (PCs) in local area networks (LANs) will be able to accomplish nearly everything that has been associated with mainframes at a fraction of the cost and with greater flexibility for the user. The reasons for establishing a LAN in a human resources environment are highlighted. The differences between a mainframe and a PC LAN are described. The characteristics of the network topology are considered. Because so many different technologies that can be applied to network design exist, many companies fail in their networking attempts. Therefore, most companies turn to the outside for help in designing and implementing LANs. |
