Abstract:Novell Inc. has released its NetWare 386 network operating system, originally as version 3.0 in 1989 and upgraded as release 3.1 in May 1990. It is intended to provide the glue to bind LANs with larger systems. Novell's approach to connectivity is threefold: NetWare Loadable Modules /NLMs/ residing on the 386 server and perform the appropriate protocol conversion; software that resides on foreign servers; and client software that allows individual workstations to address non-NetWare servers directly. It can move communications functions off of workstations onto the server, and Novell will extend the approach used for IBM and Macintosh to the UNIX workstation world.
