Abstract:Brigades as a special form of work organization are presented. They are characterized as a test of the governments' dedication to democratize firms in line with economic reforms in Eastern Europe. The conclusion seems to be somewhat more optimistic than the given data suggest. Their semisuccess and similarity to the democratic labor management measures in Social Democratic Systems are explained by the economic and social situation in Bulgaria. In Bulgaria there is less political and social tension than in Poland or even the USSR. Workers are more inclined to become concerned in participative institutions despite their critical attitudes about the actual state of reforms.
