Abstract:International finance has grown rapidly in recent decades. This growth has been associated with a gradual process of deregulation of restrictions on capital movements since the 1950s. This move towards freer and growing international capital flows could be seen as a sign of the emergence of a fully integrated global capital market (e.g. Harberger 1980). Together with the dismantlement of restrictions on trade, sealed by the signing of GATT, one might expect that the world has become one big market place for trade in commodities and financial instruments.
