Abstract:The watch industry presents us with a typical example of the way in which shifts in competitive advantage occur. Historically, the predominance of each centre in watch manufacturing has been repeatedly challenged. Manufacturing of time-pieces is relatively a sector independent of place. After many years of unchallenged Swiss leadership, the situation changed fundamentally in the 1970s with the entry of Japanese competitors in the market. In the article, the evolution of the watch industry is discussed. Strategies adopted by different competitors over the years are also dealt with.
