Abstract:In the US managed care has resulted in both new forms of providing and financing health care and in a move towards multiple-product companies. Different types of HMOs have been developed by the health insurance companies, whereby the providers have created new forms of cooperation such as integrated delivery systems. However, not only the traditio- nal players have changed their products due to competition but an increasing number of consultant firms have also ente- red the market to deliver new consulting services such as the development of guidelines. Besides these changes there is a strong movement toward mul- tiple-product companies. The traditional one-product-company is developing more and more into a multiple-product company: this is mainly the result of increasing consumer demand for choice.
