Abstract:Recession in the industrial countries will end soon. In the course of 2001, the industrial countries experienced a pronounced slowdown of economic activity with industrial production having been particularly weak. The United States and Japan went into recession while growth in the Euro Area slowed to a crawl. The terrorist attacks of September 11 have not been the cause of the recession in the US economy. The US central bank has reduced interest rates massively m the course of the year as a reaction to the deteriorating economy, and monetary policy is now extremely loose. Contrary to the US, output in the European economy hat not declined, although capacity utilization is meanwhile significantly below average as a result of sluggish growth in the course of 2001 (original in German).
